Develop a new detergent without a chlorine dependency.  Existing Chematic detergents high chlorine levels combined with high temperature application.

What Was Evaluated:

Residue 'A' and Residue 'B'

              Protein-based blood fractionation residue

  • Detergent Concentration
  • Use of Hydroxide in cleaning
  • Use of Bleach in cleaning
  • Air/liquid interface
  • Existing Chematic detergents

Criteria For A Passing Result

  • Close visual examination with 50w halogen bulb
  • Produce a "water break" free surface
  • "Water Break Free" is recognized by ASTM F-22

*Actual residue names withheld for confidentiality reasons

  • Determine if air/liquid interface simulation makes removal more difficult
  • Run schedules at 40-45 C

Soiling Method

  • Coupon was dipped in Residue A and baked at 60 C
  • The coupon was re-dipped 7 times throughout the 4 hour bake time

  • Passing results are achievable with longer process steps
  • A 5 minute pre-rinse and a 15 minute detergent step gave consistent passing results without bleach
  • Bleach did not remove Residue 'A' quicker
  • Heavier amount of Residue 'A' still dissolved in the solutions

Evaluated formulations to reduce chlorine

  • Ran various chlorine amounts in the detergent formulations
    • Chlorine amount in the detergent solution during cleaning ranged from 75-460ppm

Only the highest amounts of chlorine gave consistent passing results at 40-45 C

Screen_Shot_2016-10-18_at_3.25.20_PM.pngEvaluated formulations to eliminate chlorine

  • Ran various hydroxide amounts in the detergent formulations
    • The formulations with the lowest amounts of hydroxide performed the best
  • Ran Hi/Lo matrix of detergent concentration used in cleaning
    • 1% and 3% detergent giving different levels of hydroxide were evaluated

Lower hydroxide gave better results

This exercise showed that hydroxide level is a critical parameter

  • Milk alkaline
  • No chlorine
  • Same cleaning effectiveness as previous detergents

Screen_Shot_2016-10-18_at_3.32.49_PM.png

  • 1% Chematic 570 detergent concentration

Screen_Shot_2016-10-18_at_3.33.32_PM.png

  • 2% Chematic 570 detergent concentration
    • Bleach did not reduce time required time to remove residue
    • Less detergent and a lower temperature can be used with bleach
